This is a tribute to the movie Fandango that I wrote during National Solo Album Month. The song started as a guitar riff, and as I was listening to that and trying to find lyrical inspiration, the words "the look on his face" came to mind. That made me think of the look on Kevin Costner's face at the end of Fandango. I ordered the DVD with overnight shipping so I could get the details right.

In a burnt orange haze
Thick from the liquor and beer
Reflecting on bulletins sent from the draft board
A wedding called off in fear

Grab the keys and they go
The groovers on one final jaunt
Gardner takes all of his friends on a quest
For a bottle of Dom Perignon

She's smiling now
She’s laughing now
But it’s all in a dream

The gas gauge points at ‘E’
Gives the groovers a stop for the night
In Marfa there’s jailbait and shooting off rockets
In a graveyard resembling a firefight

At Pecos Parachute School
From a challenge a deal is proposed
A groover must prove that his courage is true
With a parachute pack full of clothes

She’s frowning now
She’s worried now
She watches him go

At the end of the road
Reality always sinks in
No more excuses for breaking her heart
A plan for a wedding begins

A Fandango he calls
She’ll dance but avoids an embrace
He reflects on what is and on what could have been
And I cry at the look on his face

She’s married now
She’s happy now
He watches her go
